Hisae Horibe
Hisae arrived Sunday 11 September. Hisae stayed until October
11th, 2005. |
Hisae had the opportunity to celebrate the Jewish New Year with my
family, as well as the Canadian Thanksgiving with turkey and all the
trimmings.
Hisae was an exemplary visitor. We all enjoyed her company. We
even learnt a few Japanese words and how to make Japanese Tea and Rice
Balls. She also spent two days (October 1 & 2) with my friends Linda
& Herb Hart.
During her stay, Hisae planted bulbs for next spring, picked
vegetables in the garden, transplanted perennials, and started raking
the golden carpet of autumn leaves. She enjoyed seeing the famous
Laurentian turning leaves and took many pictures. We had friends for
supper frequently and Hisae was a great help in the kitchen too. |
Hisae at the St. Jerome Museum of Contemporary Art September 11th,
the day she arrived. |
On Wednesday, September 14th, Hisae, Pascal and I, visited the
exhibit Les Sculpturales in St-Sauveur. Hisae met quite a few
artists.
It was a hot day, so we took a dip in the lake afterwards.
Hisae spent time with Pascal who was visiting with his grandfather
at lake Dainava from Paris France. Pascal is studying Japanese and
English. |
Hisae with Tara, Baby Ethan and Rami Negev (my son and his family.)

Hisae made friends with baby Ethan (my grandson) during our visit
on September 18th. |
When we drove back home on Sunday, September 18th, we saw a most
wonderful sight of horses by the fence at dusk....but it was just too
dark to photograph.

On Tuesday, September 20th, after we visited the market in Lachute,
Jean Jacques Pharand's studio and Charles Lefebvre, we tried to see
the horses at the Old Maxwell farm again. |
Hisae took this picture of the sunset on the way back from
Montreal. She just loves sunsets. |
Here she is with Eddy Eklove, who makes stone candles in Morin
Heights, Saturday, September 24th. |
Here is Hisae with my family on Jewish New Year's eve October 3rd,
at Rami (my son) and Tara Negev's house, with Ken McDougall and Ron &
Marlene Abileah (My brother and his wife). |
Hisae came with me to the Monday afternoon women's club (September
26th) and created a beautiful felt arrangement, which she left me as a
gift.

Hisae with Shirley, Joan, Ellie, Eileen and Janice, at the Mille
Isles Community Hall. |
The card that Hisae made for us (October 11th) displays an origami
creation of two paper cranes, as a symbol for peace.
Thank you Hisae! |
A picture taken Oct. 15th of Hisae's card, felt handiwork, flower
arrangement in the metal vase and my own bouquet of nasturtiums and
the squash centerpiece that we collected before thanksgiving.
Hisae's Felt
artwork: Hisae helped in collecting green peas from the garden before
supper, so she made one from felt. |
I took Hisae and Pascal for Happy hour at Moe's in St. Sauveur. |
With
Charles Lefebvre in front of his
Stained Glass studio September 20th. We also visited
Diana Boulay's studio (Wednesday,
October 5) and took a drive (Friday, Sept. 29th) with
Monique Laramée (also a Wwoof host)
and her Wwoofer Tamsin (from England) to the Montpellier Center of
Contemporary Art to see the
Festival Recycl'Art annual exhibit.
|
With
Jean Jacques Pharand at his studio,
next to Hisae's favourite painting of his. She was fascinated by his
sketch book. Jean-Jacques asked here which was her favourite sketch,
tore it off, signed it and gave it to her as a souvenir. |

| Tammy Luckett |
Tammy arrived August 28th, 2005 for a
week. Here she is in the garden next to the flowers she liked. She
helped with trimming and transplanting Indian Potatoes.
Tammy was great for conversing in English with Pascal Parmentier. |
 |
| Shalon Heffernan |
Shalon came on August 1st, 2005 and spent
a week. She was a great help in the garden and visited 20 artists
studios with me. She also enjoyed swimming in Lake McDonald,
Grace-Park Lake and a friend's Pond and dinner with my cousins and my
friends Sharon and Peter. On Sunday, August 7th, we took her to old
Montreal where she was planning to meet friends. She then went on to
Northern Ontario and plans to visit other parts of Canada before she
goes back to university. Before she left, she gave me a lovely poem
she wrote for me. Thanks for everything Shalon! |
Here is Shalon with her favourite artist of Route des Arts, Pierre
Trahan. |
| Annette Job |
Annette came for a one-day visit July
24th, to arrange for her stay at a later date. She stayed overnight
and was a pleasure to have.

| Basil Schur
 |
Basil arrived Sunday, July 3rd and left
Wednesday July 6th, 2005 early morning. Onwards through Thousand
Islands in Ontario and driving through Canada to British Columbia.
While here, we opened a web site for Basil and you can see his
travel letters here:
http://basilschur.tripod.com/index.html
|
After e-mail and telephone
communications, Basil cheerfully arrived in his Honda Civic, and had
many experiences to share. He was a pleasure to have as a guest.
Both, my companion Ken McDougall and I already miss him.
Basil is also a Wwoofing and Servas*
host in Denmark, a small community in South coast of Western
Australia, where he works for a community organization in
environmental education and green employment programs. He was born
and raised in Zimbabwe, but has been living in Australia for over 20
years.
* Servas is an international
organization fostering peace. I am also registered as a host in
Canada
http://canada.servas.org/ |
Basil
left me one of his drawings as a souvenir. He did not sign it, so I
scanned it and added his name at the bottom. Basil uses a technique
of engraving/scratching designs over the paper and then applying oily
pastels over. It creates lovely compositions, which he could
transform into large size canvases at some point. |
Basil with Michael.
Basil had a chance to meet Tecia Werbowski (my cousin the author)
and Michael Werbowski (her son) who shares Basil's environmental
interests. Basil likes to take dips in the lake, so he sampled the
water of our lakes. Basil brought his clarinet and played some Klezmer
and classical tunes for us.
Basil likes walking, reading and music. He immediately found John
K. Grande's books about Land Art.
Basil is a warm, giving person. He is really in tune with nature
and enjoys life to the hilt. He mentioned that he would like to have
a website so we built him one and from now on, he will input his
travel letters here:
http://basilschur.tripod.com/ |
Basil at the Chute on the North River Road, north of Lachute.
Basil helped with weeding and mowing the garden. He visited St.
Sauveur and Lachute with me, and met my colleague Charles Lefebvre at
his stained glass studio.

Basil bought a pair of running shoes at the Lachute Market. |

| Grace Lai |
Visited me June 19-24, 25 |
I am sorry I did not have a chance to
take a picture of Grace in the garden. She helped me mow the lawn and
weed. A great visitor. Thank you Grace! And here is a picture of
Grace taken with her camera during the Route des Arts Launch event at
Mikes in Lachute on June 22nd.

| Julia Jacklein
from Ontario, June 3rd-6th. 2005. |
 |
Julia wanted to see some of Montreal. So
we toured Old Montreal before heading up north. I found this corner
and just had to take a shot (looking into the yard of Gibby's
Restaurant, the old Inn). |

|
| Katja Risto
(from Germany) came April 18th to May 18th, 2005

Katja was a great help with the preparations for Passover while it
was raining cats & dogs outside, she even helped me do some
proof-reading of addresses for our art tour advertisements. |
Katja met some of my fellow artists in
their studios, even joined us (after a meeting) for a pot-luck
luncheon at Sheila Watson's place. Between the rainy periods, Katja
did rake the garden.
We went to Montreal, visited my son with his young family, drove to
Lachute and Katja ate "Poutine" a real
Québécois dish (Potato chips/fried with fresh cheddar cheese crumbs
and gravy), we went out to lunches with Ken and ate out a few times.
We ate lots of fruit and salads, Katja makes a great fruit salad!
The weather improved just a few days before Katja left, so we were
able to do some more work in the garden. When the perennial flowers
we planted bloom, I shall send her photos. |

he cuts glass for his stained glass artwork....somehow, I don't
remember where I filed that photo....
Katja went to spend a few days with relatives in Montreal and in
Ottawa and then on to a herb and strawberry farm in Ontario. She is
planning to visit British Columbia and perhaps come back through here
before flying back home in a few months. Where she will go back to
university to complete an environmental study program. |

Doreen
Schäbel
|
Doreen came to stay with me for about 10
days July 2004, she was Wwoofing with Monique Laramée and needed a
place to stay between assignments. I invited her to stay at my
place. She was such a delight that I immediately registered as a
Wwoofing host, and wrote an article about the experience. Sorry I did
not take more pictures during Doreen's stay. |
Doreen was a great help in planting the
garden and piling the wood. To see more about this experience look
here.
Doreen is now working in Germany towards her Law degree,
apprenticing with a judge and now with a lawyer. |
