David Moore Vernissage November 11th, 2007...Oh what an inspiring event!

David Moore is coming the the Laurentian Contemporary Art Museum November 11th, 2007....see more here.

“The Reality of Absence” by David Moore:  From 11 November to January 6th, 2008 Sculptures, installations, digital images, and prints by the well known artist David Moore, who inquires absence as something real and expresses it in universal forms, such as a bandaged figure curled in a fetal position, or the absence of the body in an opened sarcophagus, as well as inviting the spectators to interact.  Moore visually expresses, the emotions generated by the pain of rejection, protecting oneself from the world, the reaction to change, and sometimes energy. The show includes works created during a 30-year period. Exhibit continues until January 6th.  Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides, 101, place du Curé-Labelle, Saint-Jérôme, 450-432-7171, www.museelaurentides.ca

Auction at the Laurentian Museum of Contemporary Art, November 4th, 2007. Over $26,000 auctioned off.  A René Derouin engraving entitled "Roches de feux, (1978, 56 c 76 vm 26/25, donated by Kittie Bruneau,) brought in a price exceeding the published catalogue value and so did an oil painting entitled "Into the Light", (2007 20,3 x 29,2 cm) by Dominique Normand.  Most works were sold below the published value, but above the starting price.  The majority of the 77 pieces offered were bid on.  One bidder got 7 pieces - all exquisite prints, including David Moore's digital prints, an engraving by Indira Nair, Linotype by Wim Huysecom, lithography by André Fournelle, Silkscreen by Kittie Bruneau, a combination print (lithography, silkscreen, digital)  by Andréanne Bouchard, and the two etchings by Louise Bloom.  A charming small watercolour by Eric Slutsky ("sans titre"  28 x 25.5 cm, donated by Gaétan Morin) went for a mere $200.  The sculptor Pierre Leblanc who is known for his public space monuments , such as the hospital in Ste. Agathe, provided three works to be auctioned, all sold.  The event was well organized.  The many volunteers worked hard.  They presented the works to bid on, set lovely tables with wine and cheese, circled around replenishing bread, nuts and cheese, and filling wine glasses.  It was a wonderful afternoon at the museum.  Everybody involved should be complimented, the organizers as well as all 46 artists who gave artwork to benefit the museum.  BRAVO!

A Nine-Year Leadership Takes a New Direction!

One person that is noticed at any cultural event in the Laurentians has been Raymond Sealey, the Executive Director of Cammac.  Raymond Sealey was there, providing his leadership in promoting art in all its forms.  His leadership also meant representation for the English community in just about every venue available.  Raymond Sealey has been in the forefront, participating in boards, committees, and conferences, with good insight and positive feedback, always at ease with public speaking, delivering opening words with panache and a subtle sense of humour.

Last year, Raymond Sealey’s efforts culminated in bringing about the completion of the most impressive project ever carried out in the Laurentians.  That is the construction of the new Cammac Lodge and concert hall.

On February 13th, Raymond Sealey announced his departure from Cammac.  Sealey said: “I have had the privilege of spending nine incredible years helping to bring the Lake MacDonald Music Centre’s new building from dream to reality…”   He stated that it is entirely a personal decision “I think the timing is right for me to rest a little and look at some new directions.”  His departure from CAMMAC will be gradual.  He will remain as Executive Director until the end of the summer ensuring a smooth transition.

Mr. Sealey emphasized that he is staying in the Laurentians and will continue to lend his energies to culture and cultural tourism in the region, “I love it here and intend to stay and continue my involvement,” he stated.

After developing the magnificent Lake MacDonald project Raymond Sealey certainly deserves the rest.  However, he is still involved with quite a few cultural and tourism projects in the Laurentians, and in addition, he was already “asked by several organizations throughout Quebec to help in project analysis and planning especially in the realm of cultural and municipal projects.”   Raymond Sealey says: “It will be rewarding to apply what I have learned over the years and help other institutions.”

It is comforting to know that Raymond Sealey will still be around, especially since the new Cammac Lodge stands a good chance of becoming an award-winning project this year! And who but Raymond Sealey should be there to receive it!

What's On December 2006-January2007  This year the snow missed Christmas by one day!  On December 23rd, it was sheer ice...only 4-wheel drive cars could tackle the lake's icy road, on the 25th some of it melted so people made it to dinner, and then on boxing day we woke up to pure white-covered trees.  I was going through some very old documents and scanned some interesting pictures and documents such as my Mother's RAF (Royal Air force) service in Cairo Egypt 1944-1946.
