Wow! What a Party!
By: Shirley Captain
It
all started last year at the Wild Roots Music Festival
..I was sort of
convinced by a friend that we should celebrate our 150th
anniversary right here in our little village of Mille Isles. A
committee headed by David Hudson, our mayor, flanked by Joan Hudson,
Janet McAllister, Debbie Smith and myself, went to the drawing board. A
few activities were planned, starting with a winter festival, in two
parts, a clean-up sale with delicious hotdogs and hamburgers served by
Sharon Dawson; and a Strawberry Social organized by Judy Kenton and her
wonderful team. This included an exhibit of our Decorative Painters,
local artists Sylvie Reis, Andrée Piché and others. The major summer
event was our July 16th Field Day for the kids, and a Steak
Dinner for the rest of us. There were over 200 people at the dinner
served by George Dawson and volunteers from the Morin Heights Legion,
music provided by Pierre Rawiecz; Clark Shaw entertained everybody while
selling raffle tickets. The rest was left to the diners themselves, who
beer in hand chatted, reminisced, shook a leg and a skirt, and went
home Achy Breakey following a splendiferous fireworks display.
On July 31, a memorial day was held in which the
Historical Society of Mille Isles dedicated a stone monument, in memory
of our forefathers whose hard work built a community on this rugged
land.
Our final event is a Driving Tour of
Mille Isles, organized by Kelly Fahey, leaving from the school house
(the Old Black Store) on Sat August 27th from 1 to 4 p.m.,
with a leaflet and a map to follow. Everybody is welcome! |
