Gilles Sanscartier was
introduced to the art of duck carving (mainly Mallards) at a tender age,
while growing up in the bay of St. André, until age 15. He moved on
from working on a farm to Dairy man at Steinberg's, while studying at
night towards a degree in Business Administration at the HEC institute
of Université de Montréal, to computer guru with various large
corporations, travelling through Canada, the United States, and even
spending a year in the U.K., supervising computer systems, and
trouble-shooting. After a 7-year stay in Sept-Isles he was lured back
to Montreal, to yet another systems management job. Through his working
career he had to put his art on the back burner. However, when he came
back to St. André (about 10 years ago), his wife Jocelyne, who know how
much he missed bird-carving, registered him to sculpting classes in St.
Eustache and the rest is history. He revived his dormant talent,
improved his skills, and after only a short membership at the St.
Eustache Sculptors Association, (of which he is vice-president) already
won an honourable mention for a decoy made after a design of his past
mentor Noah Sterling.
In February 2005, at the
Salon de metiers d'art in Montreal, where Gilles entered for the first
time in the Amateur category, he won first place competing against the
professionals, for both, a carved diving bird and the best decoy, as
well as third place for the top of the competition.
Bravo Gilles!
It is a well deserved honour!
And we at Route des Arts are
proud to have you amongst us.
