Red Hat on Her Head and Purple
on Her Shoulder By:
Ilania Abileah
On Friday,
October 21st, The Rio
Grande restaurant in Lakefield was invaded by
the Laurentian red-hatters. They were dressed in red and purple, a
striking combination, so outrageous, that one can’t help but notice and
cheer. The group was lead by Joan Hudson, Queen Mother of the
Laurentian Glitzie Butterflies chapter of Mille Isles. They
were all wearing red hats with trimmings, purple clothes with sparkly
jewels, feathers, boas, ribbons, and shawls. Wives, mothers and
grandmas, instead of working, constantly taking care of others, were out
playing. They lunched and munched Ilene’s “ribs that are to
die for!” and indulged in her chocolate layer cake that can only
be described as decadent!
The Red Hat
Society was created by Sue Ellen Cooper, in Fullerton, California, on
April 25th, 1998. There are many chapters throughout the
United States and Canada. The chapters are formed by a Queen Mother
who invites friends to join and have fun before and after 50. Women
over 50 wear Red and Purple. Those under 50 wear Pink and
Lavender. There is a website that explains what it is all about
http://www.redhatsociety.com/ and now the Canadians have their own Red Hat Society
Website too:
http://www.redhatsociety.com/canada.html.
The
Laurentian Red Hat chapters get together once a month to have a meal in
one of the local restaurants. Watch out for them, you may see your
own Grandma frolicking all dressed up in red and purple.
