in Mirabel
By: Ilania Abileah (Sept.30th, 2006)
A Vittorio Fiorucci Retrospective exhibition
organized by CIEM (Centre de lImage et de lEstampe de Mirabel),
curated by Andrée Matte of the Laurentian Museum of Contemporary
art. It includes Vittorio Fiorucci Posters, photographs and
cartoons.
Until Oct. 29th, Fridays, Saturdays &
Sundays: Noon to 5 p.m.
Manoir de la Belle Rivière, 8106 Chemin de Belle Rivière, Ste.
Scholastique, Mirabel. http://www.ciem.ca/index.html,

Vittorio Fiorucci is one of Quebecs most famous
poster artists. His Poster Hold up à Mirabel,
created when the government of Canada was expropriating lands for
the Mirabel airport (1983) shows the map of expropriated land,
silk-screened and transformed into a person holding a gun.
Vittorio combines his own photographs, paper
cuttings, or torn paper pieces. The posters are striking in their
simplicity of line and form, and a pallet of three or five bold,
contrastive colours. Often humorous and
sarcastic, the posters deliver the message with a
punch!
Vittorio Fiorucci started as a caricature artist and
photographer. He came to Montreal in the 1950s, befriended local
artists, such as Robert roussil, Armand Vaillancourt, Guido
Molinari, Jean-Paul Mousseau, and embarked on a career of poster
creation. By 1970 Vittorio Fiorucci gained international
recognition. He has been awarded numerous prizes for his designs;
his work was exhibited worldwide, purchased by Museums, including
the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and printed on Time magazine
covers. When asked, what directed him to do poster art? Vittorio
says: I chose to take my art out to
the streets, where everybody can see it!
Vittorio Fiorucci is very much a part of Quebecs
cultural scene. His posters announced the most important political,
social and artistic events. Many people may recall the green
character Vittorio created for Festival Just for Laughs, his
posters for the Opera of Montreal, the Montreal Film Festival,
museum exhibits, Expo 67, the Montreal Olympics, and a host of art
events.
For the exhibition Ô Vittorio, the artist created a
special poster, a limited edition of which will be reproduced for
sale during the exhibition.
An exhibit not to be
missed!
