Dorothy Stober, Kallat
Bereshit Sol Stober, Hatan
Torah
In 1993, the dynamic duo of
Dorothy and Sol Stober joined Congregation Dorshei Emet, and
they've never look back. In their ten-plus years as a part of
our shul, Dorothy and Sol have donated, in heaping doses of
generosity, their time, energy and ruàch. Though they were
familiar with some of the ideas of Reconstructionist Judaism
(they had known rabbis who were familiar with Mordecai Kaplan),
they only joined Dorshei Emet after realizing that the Shul's
Philosophy was theirs.
From the very beginning, Dorothy
and Sol became active participants in Dorshei Emet community
life. They began their involvement with the Shul by taking
courses with both Rabbi Ron and Carmela, and soon became
fixtures with the Gemilut Hasadim, Festival and Welcoming
committees. Over the years Sol has coordinated and provided
transportation to others on Shabbat mornings and Dorothy served
part-time for nearly two years as bookkeeper and providing
tremendous assistance to the office staff. For the last two
years, Dorothy and Sol have chaired the raffle, securing the
careful coordination and execution of this important Shul
endeavour.
Sol points to his service in the
navy during World War II as one of the single most-defining eras
of his lifetime. Additionally, for more than 25 years he
volunteered as an advisor to the B'nai Brith Youth Organization
(BBYO), providing immeasurable leadership to a generation of
Canadian youth, and eventually meeting his bride. At BBYO he
was a quintessential role model, moulding and influencing the lives of hundreds of his “boys,” many of
whom are still in touch today.
For her part, Dorothy looks back
at her father’s tremendous lifetime – he lived to be 102 – as
one of many blessings bestowed upon her. In addition to her
beloved Sol, Dorothy thinks fondly of their children, Frances
and David, and their grandchildren, Celine and Simone. These
days, watching her grandchildren grow provides her with
countless hours of excitement.
On the occasion of their
respective honours, Dorothy and Sol
both think of their parents, who provided them with lots of love
and taught them about being part of a community. Sol says that
his mother gave him an appreciation of Jewish culture and his
father demonstrated what it was to be devoted to Judaism.
Dorothy thinks of her mother, in whose footsteps she never
wanted to follow, but whose volunteerism "seems to be a roadmap"
for her own life.
But to get to know either Dorothy
or Sol, you must ask them about each other. Of Dorothy, Sol
says, "She is the light of my life, she has given me purpose in
helping me be who I am, and continues to be a part of a
fabulous partnership." Of her husband Sol, Dorothy has this to
say: "He is intelligent with a great love of family and life."
