Dorothy & Sol Stober

Kallat Bereshit & Hatan Torah

It all started with a photo (on the left) featuring  Dorothy and Sol, looking like a jet-set glamorous couple.  The first two photos below cannot be enlarged....all framed pictures below, can be clicked on to enlarge.  Also see text from the Dorshei Emet Synagogue October Bulletin below.

On June 11th, I visited Dorothy and Sol and took shots of two very important photographs of the couple!

Their Wedding Day and their 50th Anniversary!

What a gorgeous couple!

Dorothy sent this one, saying: "My favourite picture of my two favourite grandchildren...This was taken at the rehearsal." (May 26th, 2005, picture taken by Rami Negev)

May 28th, 2005:  The Bat Mitzvah was something to be imprinted in memory for a long time.  Dorothy found her chosen music to sing-chant, Céline excelled, Frances, as usual perfect and Wesley held the Torah up - an image that should be painted! (From memory of course.)

Family listens when Frances talks.  Note:  There were many other pictures taken that day, but since I had some computer problems I could not recover all of them yet.

Family listens when Sol speaks.

SIMHAT TORAH DINNER Thursday, October 7, 2004

This year it is with great pleasure that we honour Dorothy Stober as our Kallat Bereshit and Sol Stober as our Hatan Torah at our Seudat Siyum. Celebrations will begin at 6:00 pm followed by Hakafot at 8:00 pm. Please join us. Contact the office at 486-9400 or info@dorshei-emet.org to reserve a place for you and your family.

Dorothy Stober, Kallat Bereshit                     Sol Stober, Hatan Torah

In 1993, the dynamic duo of Dorothy and Sol Stober joined Congregation Dorshei Emet, and they've never look back. In their ten-plus years as a part of our shul, Dorothy and Sol have donated, in heaping doses of generosity, their time, energy and ruàch. Though they were familiar with some of the ideas of Reconstructionist Judaism (they had known rabbis who were familiar with Mordecai Kaplan), they only joined Dorshei Emet after realizing that the Shul's Philosophy was theirs.

From the very beginning, Dorothy and Sol became active participants in Dorshei Emet community life.  They began their involvement with the Shul by taking courses with both Rabbi Ron and Carmela, and soon became fixtures with the Gemilut Hasadim, Festival and Welcoming committees. Over the years Sol has coordinated and provided transportation to others on Shabbat mornings and Dorothy served part-time for nearly two years as bookkeeper and providing tremendous assistance to the office staff.  For the last two years, Dorothy and Sol have chaired the raffle, securing the careful coordination and execution of this important Shul endeavour.

Sol points to his service in the navy during World War II as one of the single most-defining eras of his lifetime. Additionally, for more than 25 years he volunteered as an advisor to the B'nai Brith Youth Organization (BBYO), providing immeasurable leadership to a generation of Canadian youth, and eventually meeting his bride.  At BBYO he was a quintessential role model, moulding and influencing the lives of hundreds of his “boys,” many of whom are still in touch today.

For her part, Dorothy looks back at her father’s tremendous lifetime – he lived to be 102 – as one of many blessings bestowed upon her.  In addition to her beloved Sol, Dorothy thinks fondly of their children, Frances and David, and their grandchildren, Celine and Simone.  These days, watching her grandchildren grow provides her with countless hours of excitement.

On the occasion of their respective honours, Dorothy and Sol both think of their parents, who provided them with lots of love and taught them about being part of a community. Sol says that his mother gave him an appreciation of Jewish culture and his father demonstrated what it was to be devoted to Judaism. Dorothy thinks of her mother, in whose footsteps she never wanted to follow, but whose volunteerism "seems to be a roadmap" for her own life.

But to get to know either Dorothy or Sol, you must ask them about each other. Of Dorothy, Sol says, "She is the light of my life, she has given me purpose in helping me be who I am, and continues to be a part of a fabulous partnership." Of her husband Sol, Dorothy has this to say: "He is intelligent with a great love of family and life."

April 2003, I met with my three best friends and for the first time ever had all three of them together.  What a shame that I did not have a camera at that time.  Since then Shosh passed away after a long battle with Leukemia.  Here are some pictures that I do have.

Shosh came to visit me (with Ruth from Nursing School too) at the Gadna camp in the Carmel, 1956.

With Dina & Amos Blatt, at the swimming pool in Afikim (about 1959).

With Neta, Dina & Philip in Afikim (about 1961)

Rina, Mookie & Ruthy at the Tel Aviv Beach (about 1964).

With Rina in England 1966.

Posing with my girlfriends on my wedding day July 24, 1967.  Raaya, Ruthy, Shosh & Rina.

Shosh came to visit from New York and we spent the weekend in Bromont with Linda & Hank Avery (about 1973).
