Gina
Antinozzi is a painter, sculptor, installation and, performance artist.
Her studio is in a charming old house with a lovely garden in St. Placide.
During the nine days of Route des Arts 2003, she moved her furniture out of
the rooms and, turned her house into a gallery, where she shared the secrets
of her creative process with the public.
Some people also had a chance to see Gina costumed, performing her art in a
local café and, painting while singing and talking about her creation
..
Gina is a visual artist, who paints semi-abstract creations charged with
symbolism. She uses a variety of materials: recycled rice paper, wood
chips, and scrap metal, along with other objects, such as pieces of wood,
which she engraves. The paintings become three-dimensional with collage of
objects over the painted canvas or whatever other ground she chooses. Her
message is usually transmitted by the use of soft, blended colours painted
into geometrical and anatomical shapes. Her choice of colours is
reminiscent of the work of Delaunay, whose work
she admires. The ground is divided into separate areas. The division is
never harsh, it is definite, yet harmony is maintained between the different
spheres of night and day, season to season, water and earth or time and
eternity. Cut up recycled carton material, becomes painted spirals, which
are applied over the painting
forming circles and shadows thus, changing
the appearance of the artwork when seen from different angles.
Africa (Title inspired by Sade's
song entitled Pearls.)*

Gina Antinozzi speaks of art as a means of communication. She endeavours to
reach the public with subtle spirituality. Her love and desire to
communicate with nature is manifested in her choice of materials and
subjects. Her past work included commissioned decorative art and murals,
which required hiring a team of helpers to complete. However, presently she
concentrates her efforts on her recycled art creations. She considers the
environment sacred, but maintains that the product of mans work is also
sacred. The Screen shown here entitled Africa was made from a discarded
(Steinbergs)
store bread
display unit; the panels are made of collaged wrapping papers, treated with
layers of acrylic gel
.demonstrating that beauty can be created from
throw-away objects and, become useful again!
If
you have not had a chance to meet Gina at her studio, it would be a good
idea to plan a visit to see this artist at work
..she is one of Route des
Arts artists. (This
image was included in Masha
Shturman's Article in NY Arts Jan-Feb. 2005).
* Pearls
There is a woman in Somalia
scraping for pearls on the roadside
there's a force stronger than nature
keeps her will alive
this is how she's dying
she's dying to survive
don't know what she's made of
I would like to be that brave
she cries to the heaven above
there is a stone in my heart
she lives a life she didn't choose
