Gilles Sanscartier - Decoy Sculptor
By:
Ilania Abileah
Published
in Le Régional Dec. 9, 2005.
Gilles Sanscartier was introduced to the art of decoy carving at a
tender age, while growing up in the bay of St. André dArgenteuil. He
moved on from working on a farm to Dairy man at Steinberg's, while
studying at night towards a degree in Business Administration at the HEC
institute of the University of Montréal. Later on he became a computer
systems manager with various large corporations, travelling through
Canada, the United States, and even spending a year in the U.K.,
supervising and trouble-shooting. After a 7-year stay in Sept-Isles he
was lured back to Montreal, to yet another systems management job.
Through his working career he had to put his art on the back burner.
However, when he came back to St. André dArgenteuil, about 11 years
ago, he revived his dormant talent, improved his skills, and after only
a short membership at the St. Eustache Sculptors Association, won an
honourable mention for a decoy made after a design of his past mentor
Noah Sterling. In 2005, Gilles entered a competition in Montreal, won
first place for both, a carved diving bird, and the best decoy, as well
as third place for the top display in the competition. Gilles
Sanscartier is a member of Route des Arts since 2003.
