The Future of Public Space

Until Oct. 31, Montreal Biennale 2004 – Agora – the Public Domain: 250, St. Antoine W., Montreal.  Exhibits start at the old Gazette building; where Armand Vaillancourt will hold court, and interact with the public, while creating a new project.  Then move on underground, to roof tops, and to Place des Arts.  Contributing architects have devised numerous ways to make public city spaces liveable.  How lucky we are in the Laurentians, where even the groundhogs, come out of their tunnels to enjoy fresh air, and share in our gardens!  Info: www.ciac.ca/biennale2004.

Impressions from  a press conference a day before the official opening of the Biennale.  The photos shown here are in the order that the visit was guided by Claude Gosselin, the director of CIAC.

I took many photographs but only the ones shown here left an impression on me.  The one project that impressed me.

Photographer Ed Kostiner:  Storyboard "Public Domains"
Display of Cityscapes.

Next to the  project called Parc du souvenir Chi Chi a park with a memorial monument in Taiwan.  Curator : Claude Gosselin.

16 architects submitted installations entitled:  Ma Place =  It's MY (public) place!.

The most, of which I do not have photographs, was the roof-top scenery project created by architects for city office people who spend their days high up in sky scrapers, never seeing the ground or greenery.  Roof-tops of lower buildings were painted with interesting designs.

No, thank you, I would rather live in the countryside!

Photographer Ohanian attentive to questions from the press.

I found his photography interesting, challenging and of course very professional.  He had something to say and did it without words.  Bravo!

Ohanian: photographs of a Chicago street junction.

Ohanian: shots of city people from the top.

Ohanian: the Gypsy series.

Architects were working on a project to make all the inner/ underground city and its tunnels more liveable, by incorporating tables, chairs, wall decorations etc., into all those long corridors that city people spend many wakeful hours in.

Architect Prosky (of CCA), next to the underground display of Hyper-Building.

Curator : CCA (Centre canadien d'architecture.)

View of the old Press Room, in which Armand Vaillancourt displayed some of his old installations. This is the first time that this Quebec artist whose projects always make it into the press, was invited by the director to participate in the Biennale, and what's more the Director was actually the curator of the Armand Vaillancourt exhibit.

Armand Vaillancourt:  wall hanging Peace a project done with children.

Where Armand Vaillancourt held court for invitees.  A nice playground for displaying his charismatic persona.

Armand Vaillancourt plays dead.

Vaillancourt:  Oyster River.

Vaillancourt:  installations including the boat.  And yes, he was working on a project and interacting with viewers with his usual panache.

Before leaving the old Gazette building, we were treated to a roomful of images from past Biennale events.

Note Dec. 2005: The fifth edition of the Biennale de Montréal will take place in May and June 2007.  Wayne Baerwaldt is the new curator of the Montreal Biennale 2007.  For more information click here: http://www.ciac.ca/en/2007.html.
