 Farewell to Barbara Elmslie

On October 6th friends and family gathered in the Community center at Lost River, Harrington to celebrate the life of Barbara Elmslie who passed away September 12th 2007.  In her own words she wrote “What a journey I’ve been on since July 2006!”  Barbara kept a positive attitude.  ….stayed in touch, even updated her website with the latest paintings, and wrote” ….painting is wonderful because I love doing it so much and it keeps me focused.  One of the paintings I did this winter won a prize in the Ottawa Art Association show this Spring so that was encouraging.”  This was but one of the many prizes Barbara has received during her career.

Barbara wrote: “During my confinement have been experimenting with different media, gouache, casein, oil and acrylic as well as using different supports to paint on….”  Anybody who has ever seen Barb paint, remembers those nimble fingers that danced over the paper like magic wands….There was a watercolour pallet into which Barb dabbed either brush or finger….suddenly there was a tree trunk, and then the branches and leaves took life, then snow appeared and a cardinal sat on it!  Or the snow covered hills with a few lonely trees sprung up and two skiers were coming down the hill…..When she painted summer blooms or children playing at the lake, she swept the viewer into her fascinating world.  She loved Country living and the Laurentians.  That love was so aptly expressed in her paintings.  Her water colours were Poetry, her pastels exuberant, and her oils and acrylics full of life.

Barbara will be missed by her family, colleagues and art lovers for many years to come.

Farewell Barbara!

Barbara Elmslie – Benefit Exhibit December 2006

Barbara Elmslie has been one of the Laurentians favourite artists for many years.  She has also been teaching painting for over 35 years in the Laurentians and across Canada.  She paints in a variety of techniques, including pastel, watercolour, oil, acrylics and casein.  Some of the techniques she teaches are not even taught in other art schools.  Thus many of her colleagues actually take refresher courses with her.  She participated in numerous exhibitions in Canada and elsewhere, and is a member of a few art groups, as well as the Greater Argenteuil Route des Arts.  She is the recipient of awards and prizes, and her art is included in international publications and Canadian art books.  Barbara loves Laurentian country living.  She paints nature scenes and the people who live here with love, and continues to delight us with her work year after year.

Her exhibition entitled Country Living will take place at the beautiful historical Christ Church in St. André d’Argenteuil.  A contribution will be made to the Lakeshore General Hospital Oncology department for each painting sold.  So if you do not yet own a Barbara Elmslie painting, this is your chance to buy one thereby contributing to a good cause!

Saturday & Sunday, December 2nd & 3rd, 2006, Christ Church, 163 route du Long-Sault, St. André d’Argenteuil, Noon to 5 p.m.

Text published in Main Street, June & December 2003 within my column ARTS Etc.

Barbara Elmslie, who uses different mediums, says:  My choice of medium depends on the subject. The beauty of oil is the texture, in watercolour the flow of water, and in pastel the stroke.  Oils are more like a novel, while watercolour and pastels are like a poem.”
