A painter who dreamt up her own enchanting style

By: Claire Oscuro

Lucienne Auphan presents a collection of paintings inspired by the sea, the river or stream of water. Her canvases are narrative, depicting the joy of passing time by the water the “source of life.” The artist is reflecting on people’s future in the 21st century. The characters shown in her paintings are calmly engaged in an activity. They are shown from the back, thus rendering the scene very private. The painting are made in lively colours, the shapes are naïf and exude a sense of amazement with a touch of humour.

Lucienne Auphan is a self-taught painter. She did however take classes with some well known artists, such as Rolland Palmerthi. She says that when she started painting she did landscapes and flowers like most beginners. However, she searched and found her own personal expression. She says that it came to her in a dream in which she saw herself painting amusing colourful cartoons. Thus she set out to design her own images that enable her to fondly describe her daily encounters with the people around her.

Lucienne Auphan is one of the new artists of the Route des Arts 2007. She also does quilting, decorative textile hangings and other useful objects, in which she combines the art of painting with patchwork and appliqué.

The exhibition will be shown from June 7th to 30th at the Café-bistro Au Trécarré, 79, boul. René Lévesque, St-Placide. 450 258 2211. Vernissage: Saturday, June 9th 1 to 5 p.m.

22 February 2007

Lucienne Auphan was selected by the jury for Route des Arts 2007 with her quilts and humorous paintings.  These are two parts of her quilt entitled Douce Patience.

Here are samples of traditional (piecing) squares she is preparing for a quilt.

Lucienne is now working on quilting for which she made a research on ladies' hat fashion in the 18th to 20th centuries.  The squares are put together in the traditional way in groupings of 4 that will be attached with loops that can be detached for display in separate groupings.   In addition to different patterns of quilt-stitching on each square, she does appliqué of objects such as feathers, the illustrated lines are stitched and the facial features are painted on in textile acrylic paint.

The work table contains samples of appliqué and piecing techniques cut from patterns Lucienne prepares.

Painted patch-work with appliqué, quilt-stitched, sewn and mounted as a hanging.....lots of lovely materials for the next projects.

Her quilt "Iris mes amoures" is now in France as part of an exhibition-competition of textile art.

Here are two quilts.

The hat collection simply captivated me.

I had to show it all, even though the pieces are not finished yet.

Lucienne says that she had a dream that she is painting comics, following which she started painting this series of small paintings.  In her words she paints: "...des personnages, un peu naïfs, un brin humoristiques, toujours de dos ils assistent à un événement.  Cela donne un cachet très personnel à ses œuvres."  ...people, a bit naïve with a touch of humour, participating in an activity, always painted from the back, which gives it a personal touch."

Lucienne does a combination of quilting, appliqué, patchwork, painting and cloth stamping techniques (with textile paint and hot-pressing-the painted cloth for fast-colours.)  She also makes quilt decorated tote bags.

A traditional quilt.
