ARTS Etc December 2003:

Music

A wonderful artistic project inspired by Water.  We, who live in the Laurentians, enjoy the abundance of this life-giving resource.  However, it needs our protection.

The beauty and fragility of water is revealed in the book Water Music (University of Michigan Press, 2003).  It features 100 photographs of water by photographer Marjorie Ryerson, accompanied by the writings and musical contributions of 66 musicians.  Including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Dave Brubeck, Bruce Cockburn, Pete Seeger and, other celebrated musicians from around the world.

Because of Water Music, Ryerson has been chosen as the 2003 winner of the Paul Keough Award, in recognition of “efforts to communicate to the public the need to protect the water environment.”

Marjorie Ryerson is donating all her net royalties from the sale of Water Music to a United Nations Foundation to restore water and provide clean drinking water for families worldwide.  For book orders, call 800-621-2736 www.press.umich.edu.  To contact the Project, write:  Water Music Project, P.O. La Ligne du Nord

Land Art “causes the public to reassess their relation” to nature.  John K. Grande reports that a contemporary art project took place in the Laurentians this summer.  The artworks were created in situ, thus merging nature and art.  The photo shown here is Mobius Manic, featuring circles of maple branches in a still pond.  An installation made by the U.S. artist Roy Staab, at Domain St. Bernard (Greyrocks area).   (John K. Grande is a well known art writer who owns a cottage near Kilmar).

Another interesting work can be seen at Domain St. Bernard, entitled “La carrière dans la forêt: faire naître ensemble une ile-jardin et la protèger” (Sand pit in the forest: create a garden island in the pit and protect it), built by the French duo of Bruni-Babarit (Photographs:  provided by Mr. Grande).  Catherine Widgery’s project can be seen in St. Jovite, near the bike-path.  Bill Vazan’s rock face work is beneath the telecabine at Mt. Tremblant.  Dominique Valade created a boat and archway sculpture on the Rivière Rouge near Labelle. These are but a few of the artworks created during August 2003. The project was co-ordinated by the Centre des Arts contemporain du Québec à Montréal.

A new edition of John K. Grande’s book “Balance -Art and Nature” will appear in October, (Black Rose Books.)  It contains five new chapters.   The book can be ordered by calling 1-800-565-9523
